What does THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, Center for Disease Control,Pres. Bush, have in common?
All agree the avian flu is going to start a pandemic (possibly more lethal than the 1918 spanish flu that claimed millions of lives worldwide). All agree social disruption (no utility services, no available food, no trash pick up, closed banks, overtaxed medical facilities, no police or firefighters to answer calls) will become a reality during this pandemic. There is no vaccine to save you. Our President has outlined a plan and allocated millions and millons of dollars to be used at every level of government to EDUCATE people and help them to prepare for what is coming. All businesses, schools, churches must have a pandemic plan in place, as mandated by law. After the pandemic starts, its too late to prepare. It then becomes a time to stay isolated. At the county level, what steps have your communituy taken to prepare you and your family for this inevitable world health crisis? Only serious responses. This is not a joking matter. call for spending on alleged threats and neglect of existing threats, which are usually very vulgar, in reality.

This seems like quite a bit of an alarmist reaction. First, the Centers for Disease Control website states that “While there has been some human-to-human spread of H5N1, it has been limited, inefficient and unsustained… Nonetheless, because all influenza viruses have the ability to change, scientists are concerned that H5N1 virus one day COULD be able to infect humans and spread easily from one person to another.” I don’t deny that this is a potential threat to health and, as CDC stated, COULD become a major pandemic, but it is far from an inevitable crisis. Of course we should prepare for it, but this requires an increase in the public health budget that the Republicans don’t seem to put at the top of their priority list. What will probably end up happening, as is generally the case, is that the outbreak will occur and HMOs and pharmaceutical companies will earn ludicrous profits from the suffering of others, while the more vulnerable in our society are completely exposed.

Are you scared, what they all have in common is the need to scare the world to keep us concentrating on this and not on the bigger picture.
They are all run by rich white men with a great deal of political power and the need to keep that power.
Dont worry about this “new” threat as they are always trying to scare us. Remember the anthrax letters and mad cow disease.
If we spent more time on working out solutions to these issues instead of running scared and saving our own asses then there would not be a problem.
Search disinfo.com for more info they have a book all about this new bird flu thing.
Dont worry too much, but definatly have an eye out
The world is not going to explode. xxx

Your opening question is well put. What these three have in common, I believe, best answers your question. It is the ability to collect, filter, manipulate and summarize the significance of scientific information commonly unintelligible to the layman in ways that may or may not, at their will, solicit the respect, submission or even fear of the populace, national and international, that breeds political power (as with the case of prewar-Iraq).
